Some people think of exercise as playing games such as baseball, tennis or running in races. Some people think of exercise as simply a way to lose weight or protect your heart.
The reason you exercise is important because the reason will be the motivating factor in whether you do exercise. Whether you exercise to play or to protect your health does not matter. Whatever the reason or motivation is, the result of getting you to exercise is the important thing to consider.
It is the same with what type of exercise you do, whether it is playing tennis, running a race, or going to a class. What you do is not as important as doing something.
But, let’s take a look at this topic of exercise to get rid of any confusion you may have.
What we are talking about is movement – that’s it – movement. Getting your body moving is the key. It is movement of the joints and muscles and the stress placed on your joints, muscles and bones, combined with helping improve stamina, balance, coordination and attitude that results in improving your health. These are the important aspects. So whether you call it exercise or activity, playing or working out and whether you do it because you really enjoy it or you just know you have to do it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you MOVE.
Weight bearing movement is as necessary to your health as breathing. Just try to not breathe for one minute. I just did that as I am writing this – it is hard and scary. Your body needs to move, your body was created to move, your body can not be healthy without movement.
When you move, the physical part of the activity stimulates a physiological response that causes your molecular biology to change. It is this response to movement that is responsible for every benefit of physical activity and exercise you have ever heard of.
- Improved cardiovascular health
- Weight loss
- Stronger bones
- Improve and prevent arthritis
- Improve PMS
- Reduce the risk to cancer
- Reduce the risk to diabetes
- Help control diabetes
- Balance cholesterol
- Lower blood pressure
- Improve sleep
- Improved energy
The list goes on and on…
If exercise or physical activity is as vital to your health as breathing, then exercise and physical activity will and does support and improve every aspect of your health.
You don’t have to run marathons, enter an Ironman Triathlon or become the Aerobic Queen.
But you do need to get moving. I can help you achieve your goal of running a marathon or just get and stay healthier.
I have a post-graduate degree in Sports medicine which involved treating injuries, designing exercise programs, designing training plans and fitness evaluation. I have worked with world class athletes to help them compete. But more importantly, I have helped hundreds of people make healthy movement a part of their lives which resulted in helping them obtain a key part of their wellness plan.
I can simplify this confusing topic. The goal is to know and understand your needs, your limits, both in time and physical ability and design a plan that will allow you to improve and support your health. Contact us to set up a time to consult with you.
